The Comparison of Physician’s and Nurse’s Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Pain Management

Abstract

|
Purpose : Physicians and nurses attitudes and levels of knowledge toward pain management was determined through this study in order to provide effective basic information which will promote systematic and suitable pain intervention for patients. Methods : One hundred sixteen physicians and nurses working in general hospitals and clinics in the metropolitan city of Daegu and surrounding Gyeongbuk Province were surveyed between April 1st and April 30th, 2011. The data were analyzed by using SPSS-WIN Version 18.0, to calculate the frequency, the percentage, the means, and the standard deviation, which were analyzed through t-test. Results : The average rate of correct answers to the questions about the knowledge of pain was 71.51%. The average rate of correct answers to the questions about analgesics uses was 53.34%. 58.6% of the subjects were educated in pain management and 94% of the subjects provided a positive assessment of the need for pain management education. Since the correlation was 95%, it is clear that there is a positive correlation. Conclusion : Based on the results of the research the study concludes, the clinical staff needs ongoing education in pain management, to improve pain management, pain management guidelines and programs need to be developed, continual assessment and monitoring of pain assessment.
